Half Moon Bay traveled to Aptos Friday afternoon for their first round CCS matchup. The Cougars got a runner in scoring position in the 1st after Preston McAuley singled, and advanced on a groundout. Unfortunately the Cougars couldn’t knock him in as the Ace for Aptos settled down. Luckily Half Moon Bay had their Ace Danny Guevara on the mound. Guevara gave up a single in the 1st, and did not allow another hit until the 5th. He would have retired 11 batters in a row if not for a Cougar error in the 4th. Half Moon Bay got a 2 out rally going in the top of the 6th after Jared Mettam singled, and stole second base. McAuley again delivered a clutch single to left, but Mettam was gunned out at the plate. Aptos had a scoring chance in the 6th, but Guevara showed he could field his position too. He caught a bunt in the air for an out, struck out the next batter, and got a pop out to shortstop Jack Mettam to strand a runner at 3rd. HMB went down 1-2-3 in the 7th as Aptos would have a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. Guevara gave up a 2 out hit, and David Fisher made a great play at third on a ground ball to get the final out of the inning and send the game to extras tied at 0. Both starting pitchers remained in the game, but began to show signs of fatigue. HMB started another 2 out rally as Owen Murray worked a walk. Tristan Hoffman delivered the knockout blow to the Aptos starter with a 2 strike line drive single to right field. The Aptos closer was able to end the inning leaving the go ahead run on second. Guevara remained in to start the 8th, and got a line out to right field. He hit the next batter, but got a groundout from Fisher to Murray to get the lead out at second but the Cougars couldn’t quite turn the double play to end the inning. Guevara was on fumes and the bases ended up loaded after a single and a walk so HMB went to their closer David Fisher. Fisher was cool under pressure as he got to 2 strikes on the batter before a medium line drive was hit and landed just out of reach of center fielder Cade Duncan to end the game 1-0 Aptos. Guevara pitched his heart out in the loss going 7 2/3 innings with 3 strikeouts, 4 hits allowed, 1 walk and 1 run allowed. Preston McAuley led the Cougars with 2 hits, Hofmann and Jared Mettam had 1 hit each. Half Moon Bay was led all season by Seniors Luke Outman, Jack Mettam, and Preston McAuley, they will be missed next season.
