On a triumphant night for Half Moon Bay, the Cougars boys and girls hosted two CCS games as high seeds and the Cougar boys followed a great girls’ win, with a crushing victory over the #6 seeded Pacific Grove Breakers. The boys notched a 76-45 win to advance to the CCS Div 4 semifinals at Hartnell College in Salinas Thursday night at 7:30 against #2 Carmel to try to avenge an early season December loss to the Padres and advance to the CCS championship.
The Cougars overwhelmed Pacific Grove from the outset and eventually were able to get CCS playoff playing time for all 20 rostered players including JV callups. Starting 3 freshman and no seniors, PG was clearly overwhelmed by HMB’s early swarming ¾ quart press. HMB repeatedly turned over PG on the first line (Zeke Syme and Sean Ediger) and then on the second line (Mykola Ediger and Lukas Meighen) to force 12 first half turnovers. Syme [SO] starred in the early going with 8 first quarter points (making 4 of 5 and 12 points for the game) scoring off steals and making tough contested layups. On three drives to the bucket, Syme got fouled on two and elicited the younger generation’s “burn” from the bench and the student section leaving his defender with ankle braces on the third. Sean Ediger was also tremendous making all three of his shots in the first quarter and adding 4 assists, and 4 rebounds in the first half (and zero turnovers for the game).
PG tried to limit losses with a 3-2 defense at the outset of the second quarter but nothing was going to overcome their talent and experience deficit. HMB finished the half up 38-20, highlighted by Ben McKnight’s consecutive layups the second on his own and the first a recipient of an incredibly athletic one-touch, one-handed whipping pass from Mykola.
HMB outscored PG 20-10 in the 3rd quarter and never really looked back except to enjoy the Cougar Band knocking out the beats. Syme continued his scoring and McKnight added two steals (18 total for HMB) to make it clear HMB was going to triumph. The Cougars had one of their best games of the season from the 3-point arc making 6 of 14 and especially from the charity stripe making 10 of 13, both if continued, will help them against the remaining high seeds in CCS.
Late action included two driving buckets from Kris Reyes, three 4th quarter shots from Drew Dorwin (FR) and 5 points from Dio Lucido (FR) back from a broken foot, and 3 assists from Owen Wooliever (SO).
