A game of two teams who look to push the ball through their aggressive defensive play; the game started just that way as both teams picked up full court, trapped, and looked for steals. Through the first half, your HMB Lady Cougars were able to keep pace as they were down 10 with 2 minutes left in the half matching made basketball for made basket in transition.
However what the Lady Cougars couldn’t match was the size and strength of the South City post players as they were able to not only grab offensive boards but force Belmonte and Bowers into early first half foul trouble. Unofficially, South City scored 16 points from offensive rebounds in just the first half. The biggest offensive rebound came in the last seconds of the first half when South City’s Malepeai hit a three at the buzzer to end the half.
While South City’s Salise tallied 18 points and at least 10 offensive rebounds (unofficial), HMB’s Abby Urban (Sr) battled the entire night scoring 9 of her own and continued her solid and consist play.
Kennedy (Fr) added 13 points and Bowers (Sr) added 8 points.
Next up for your Lady Cougars is a home match up verses Westmoor HS. Westmoor will pose similar challenges as they both look to be a top of the PAL standings with South City.
