The HMB Boys lost a hard fought non-league game 55-47 Saturday night to a tough Sacred Heart Prep team ranked #8 in CCS. The Cougars trailed from the outset and almost the entire game trying to overcome slow starts in three of the four quarters, but gamely battled back to challenge the Gators until the last buzzer. Mykola Ediger (15 points, 6 boards) and Ben McKnight (14 points, 6 boards) carried most of the offensive load against a very good and tall SHP defense that didn’t allow many easy shots to the Cougar’s leading scorers.
HMB spotted SHP to an early 9-0 lead as they had trouble making anything fall until Mykola and Sean Kennedy (7 points, 4 rebounds) hit 3s late in the first to close to 13-7. But shooting 3 of 15 in the quarter put them in a hole until they went on a 21-8 run lasting into the 2nd quarter and ending with a nice driving lefty layup in traffic by Zeke Syme (4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals) to end the half down 6.
Coming out of the break, the Cougars once again started slowly, making only one of their first 8 shots – some misfires at least, due to the SHP defense. A strength all night long was the work on the offensive boards that led to second chances 16 different times. McKnight benefitted in the 3rd quarter as he scored 11 mostly beating his defender one-on-one and giving HMB the lead briefly on a long three. But SHP had an answer throughout the game, including a 7-0 run out of the 4th and never led by less than 5 the rest of way. The Cougars play next at Westmoor Wednesday night back in PAL league play.
