The cold and flu diminished Cougars played solid basketball for 3 quarters against league leading Jefferson, taking a 6 point advantage into the final frame. Sporting a zone defense to Jefferson’s man-on-man, the home team challenged Jefferson to beat them from deep.
The strategy was working as Jefferson was held to 6 of 17 from beyond the arc. HMB was up by 11 in the 2nd quarter and by 10 in the 3rd. The Cougars made 52% of their shots in the first half, led by Lukas Meighan’s 11 points including three 3’s. HMB started to show weakness by shooting 3 of 10 in the 3rd, though their defensive play kept most of their half time advantage. The Grizzlies held the Cougars scoreless for the first six minutes of the final quarter, however, taking a lead with 2:02 remaining in the game. Second half free throws were a huge differentiator, with Jefferson making 5 of 5 and HMB netting 3 of 10. Leading all scorers was Sorie Syme with 17 on 7 of 11 from the field.

Regular season play concludes Friday night at the high school with a rivalry game against Terra Nova. Winner finishes second in league and moves on to the P.A.L. playoffs Monday night at Sequoia. The loser of this contest has a week off to prepare for CCS Division 4 playoffs as both teams have qualified. The Senior Night tip off is scheduled for 7:45 pm.
