Wednesday night the JV Cougars chalked up their second straight PAL win and third straight overall over the South San Francisco Warriors. The Cougars continued their high energy effort on defense to bolt to a 16-6 first quarter lead employing a stifling press and forcing multiple turnovers and finishing the quarter on an 11-2 run. Only the Cougars many missed layups prevented a much larger lead.
The Warriors started hitting 3s to end the first half at 20-13, and continued the long range shooting into the 3rd quarter pulling to 25-23 on a 10-0 run finally broken with a Kai Guevara put back. In total, SSF made 5 second half threes and briefly pulled ahead leading to a tie at 29-29 with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. The young Cougars’ defense stiffened and Zeke Syme finished off the Warriors, scoring the final 5 points with a breakaway layup and a high arcing 3 ball. Syme led all scorers with 16 points, Guevara chipped in 8 on some nice short jumpers, and Luke Longaker did good work around the bucket to notch 8. The JV Cougars continue PAL competition Saturday at HMBHS against Westmoor.
