Congratulations to Claire Yerby for qualifying for the state championship meet in Fresno this past weekend. Claire finished 3rd in CCS to get there. At the state meet, she was seeded 10th in her preliminary heat and 20th overall. She finished in 8th in her heat and 18th place overall, beating her seeding in both categories, which is always a little side goal. In the process, Claire ran the fastest 1600m time in HMB history. She ran a 5:01.63. This beat the record of 5:02.16 set by Liza Hitchner in 2004.
Claire ran an excellent race, pacing herself with the pack. When the leaders separated, (the winner ran under 4:50), Claire stayed to her plan. She moved up in the pack and kicked past competitors in the last lap. Afterward, she said she can’t wait to get going on the next goal and that is breaking the 5 minute barrier.
Claire had an excellent season. In addition to making the state meet and setting the 1600m school record, she was part of the record setting relay team that won at Arcadia. She set Personal Best times in the 1600, 800, and 3200, setting one individual school record and joining Kendall Mansukhani, Jayda Bodas and Anna Bikle on setting two relay school records. That is the second state patch Claire earned this school year, with the other being in Cross Country. Amazing Junior year Claire Yerby!
